It was with profound sadness I learned of Master
Hyam. His book Zen perfectly described my own martial way•• Often frustrating; always enlightening. He has found peace at last and we were fortunate to have him show us the pathway. Thank you for teaching us.

I recently read Zen in the Martial Arts after owning it for what must be two years, part of a big splash out on zen themed books I never touched until recently. I finally remembered to look you up, and only just now found out you'd died. Just want to thank you for the wisdom in that book, that educated and inspired me. Thank you very much Joe, see you in the dojo in the sky :)

Having studied martial arts for many years I found Joe's Zen book and it made me re-appraise my own journey into the martial arts. Since then I have read the book about 20 times and shared it with many others. I find it an inspiration not only in my life as a martial artist but in all aspects of life. Whenever I need inspiration or things putting into perspective I read Jo's words and his obvious spirit shines through like a beacon of sense. I am sure he is with those who he loved and who loved him sitting down watching us all get on with our busy lives, peace be with you Joe and thanks for your spirit.

Joe, - as I sit here and read the wonderful thoughts from those who knew you, I remember the wondrful twenty years of my friendship with you as your "Mom", you, as my daughter Lisa's husband, and her soul mate and love of her life. Thank you for being such a close part of my life, and for making my daughters life one that will live forever. Marilyn

I started practicing Shotokan karate at the age of 5. I started reading his book in high school and it opened my eyes to another mindset in my training. I found myself nodding in agreement with what he wrote; everything made sense. Since then I have used his book in one of my majors in college and I speak about it to the kids and adults I teach Shotokan to. In this day of MMA, tournament-focused clubs, etc. Hyams' book and his thoughts remind us that there is more to martial arts than winning trophies, medals, and fights. We don't need tangible objects in order to know if our training is meaningful. Joe importantly remind us that a zen mindset carries over to other sports as well as other parts of our lives.
Indeed, Joe teaches us that it's not "Martial Arts is life," but martial arts our a part of our lives.
Thank you Joe for giving me the map for my path on life.

No better a book could've been read for an young martial artist like myself; "Zen in the Martial Arts" is a constant source of inspiration to better my life and technique in Shitoryu Karate, not to mention my relationships abroad. Mr. Hyams, I feel as if I've known you for a long time, even though we have never met. I can only hope to attain the level of discipline and enlightenment that you have in the martial arts. Best of luck to all those in their journey in the martial arts, and may my gratitude and respect be forever given to such an extraordinary man.
